The merle gene is (M) is dominant to solid (m).The merle gene is a diluting gene that affects the dark coat colors normally seen in dogs.This strong dominant gene combines with the solid colors to create the merle pattern or the multicolor patches all over the dog's body. It lightens whatever the color might have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat and leaves patches of undiluted color randomly scattered over the coat kind of like bleach splashed over a dark colored cloth.

One dose of the merle gene on an otherwise black dog produces a merle, a more or less bluish gray dog dappled with black spots.

Since the black gene is also associated with  chocolate, blue and lilac you can see these colors with merling also.
